FROM: IVETTE CAMPBELL (personal)

TO: ROXANNE SCHWARTZ (personal)

Dear Roxanne,

Latoya and I are talking about separating. I can’t believe it’s really happening. I never thought it would come to this.

I’ll send you a message.

IVETTE

IVETTE//

I'm so sorry that I'm not contacting you over something more pleasant, I just...

You were there. You knew us.

ROXANNE//

I will always be your friend first and foremost.

I'm glad to hear from you. The reason doesn't matter to me.

I was ecstatic that you were reading my blog.

IVETTE//

Oh, yeah. I found it while looking to see if you were on any of the new social media platforms. I had some of your old links but it didn't look like you were still active.

ROXANNE//

No, not much anymore.

I'm sorry to hear about you and Latoya.

IVETTE//

Yeah. Me too.

You know it's been ten years?

ROXANNE//

Has it really?

Time flies.

IVETTE//

It does.

We moved back here and everything's been falling apart.

I want to believe it's just her difficulty with work, but it just seems more than that.

She's said some really horrible things to me.

I don't want to believe that I've wasted the last ten years of my life with someone who's always resented me.

I still love her.

ROXANNE//

And you probably always will, you're that kind of person.

IVETTE//

Are you free to get a coffee this week?

I know you said you're working but my schedule's open...

ROXANNE//

I can't, actually, this week. I broke my arm and I'm laid up in bed.

IVETTE//

My God! I'm so sorry to hear that!

You stay in bed and get better. It's not a big deal.

ROXANNE looks at the door behind her. She stands and walks to the door, looking into the glass. KALI stares back at her through the chasm, hands cupping the silver bars.
