// MARSCAPONE APARTMENTS //

It is the evening of VLADISLAUS STRAUD’s New Year’s Eve Fête. It traditionally marks a day of fasting for the Vampires; he customarily requests each of the invited to refrain from ‘partaking in last year’s sorrows’ before their arrival. For the Elders, this is less of a concession than it is for the young.

Adjacent to the School known as the MAGICADEMY of Astoria, Queens, sits a cluster of townhomes owned by MYRTLE MARSCAPONE. Inside one of these apartments dwell the vampires KEVIN, CEDRIC, now left largely to their own devices following the death of the esteemed Elder VINCENT MARSCAPONE.

The night rises and CEDRIC begins to stir from sleep’s solitude.

He pushes off the top of his coffin and one edge clatters down, sound only slightly dampened by the presence of a threadbare carpet.

To one side of him on the floor lays a plain coffin in dark wood, top still in place. The air is heavy with silence.

CEDRIC

(thinking) Kev, you up?

(thinking) … Kev?

But he says nothing.

CEDRIC rises from the padded interior of his sleeping arrangement and takes a seat at a nearby piano.

How this instrument got into the basement has always been a mystery to the young vampire. Was it constructed here? Was it placed before the building was fully constructed? Was it brought in parts? He knew VINCENT was knowledgable in many subjects but the finer art of piano construction was not one he’d thought in his purview.

But ever since the Elder had gone, it had increasingly seemed prudent to accept the way things were, rather than wish for something else. Impolite, it would be, to hearken back to a time long past with questions that didn’t need to be asked; inquiries that didn’t need to be answered.

He flips through some sheet music and settles on a familiar theme, plunking through the opening notes gently, repeating each motion until he can make even the faintest claim of ease.

The noise wouldn’t stir KEVIN’s otherworldly slumber, though it does pass the time and lessen the anxiety that clouds CEDRIC’s thoughts in the quiet chamber.

CEDRIC

(thinking) Kev, you up?

But he would wait until his companion rose of his own accord. There was no risk of missing the party.

There was evidence of precipitation when they approached the car. A light sprinkling of water covered the windshield and roof of the car. Had it fallen as snow? It was likely, despite the difficulty to precisely tell the exact chill of the night air.

KEVIN

DID YOU KEEP TO STRAUD’S REQUEST THIS YEAR?

CEDRIC hadn’t regarded the fasting last year.

CEDRIC

YEAH. I DID.

KEVIN drives the car from the driveway. CEDRIC waits until the car is completely clear of the driveway before closing the gate and locking it. He gets into the car and slams the door shut.

CEDRIC

OLD FOGEY CAN PROBABLY SMELL IT ON US.

KEVIN

HE’S BEEN PRETTY LENIENT WITH YOU.

I WOULDN’T WORRY ABOUT IT.

WE CAN ALWAYS STOP IF YOU NEED.

I DON’T REALLY THINK IT’S US HE’S TARGETING.

CEDRIC

EH.

THOUGHT I’D SEND OUT AN OLIVE BRANCH THIS YEAR.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH.

KEVIN

NEVER HURTS TO BE DIPLOMATIC.

CEDRIC

HURTS ME.

// STRAUD MANSION //

The car curls into place outside the Jamaica Estates home. The house has a generous carpark out front but no one else has arrived. STRAUD usually parked his car on the street’s edge; evidently he hated the idea of being blocked into his own home.

They knock, wait, and soon STRAUD answers the door.

STRAUD

WELCOME, FRIENDS.

CEDRIC had thought the line would be better finished with the term ‘children’, though he balked at the idea of being referred to in such a way.

It would be for the theatrics only. Neither CEDRIC nor KEVIN were technically STRAUD’s children, making them ideally suited for apprenticeship.

KEVIN

COUNT.

IT’S GOOD TO SEE YOU.

STRAUD

FIRST IN, LAST OUT.

It was common knowledge that once the bell tolled midnight, the vampires oft scattered, eager to locate prey when boozy and agreeable. STRAUD’s comment was hardly a threat; he had no complaint.

The foyer is dimly lit with candles and a dusty chandelier. The flames waver, struggling against the wind, but they do not go out. STRAUD shuts the door behind his guests.

STRAUD

THANK YOU, BOYS, FOR COMING.

IT IS GOOD TO KNOW I WILL NOT HAVE TO SPEND THE YEAR’S BIRTH ALONE WITH MY THOUGHTS.

KEVIN

YOU KNOW EVERYONE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE GET-TOGETHER.

STRAUD

LOOKING FORWARD TO A CONCLUSION OF AN EVENT IS NOT THE SAME AS ANTICIPATING THE EVENT ITSELF.

REGARDLESS.

CEDRIC.

I HAVE A MATTER ABOUT WHICH I’D LIKE TO SPEAK BEFORE ANYONE ELSE ARRIVES.

KEVIN took this opportunity to take his leave and walk up the stairs to his left.

STRAUD

PLEASE COME HAVE A SEAT IN THE SITTING ROOM.

A fire roars in the hearth. CEDRIC, STRAUD sit on catty-corner couches. By the look of the healthy flames, it has been burning for hours.

STRAUD

I WANT YOU TO PLEDGE YOURSELF TO OBOROVSKY.

The command is out of left field.

SVETLANA OBOROVSKY was a name with which he was familiar, though they had never spoken privately. She occasionally made appearance on the wIntraNet, though she often seemed distracted.

CEDRIC

I THOUGHT YOU WERE TO TAKE ON VINCENT’S STUDENTS.

WASN’T THAT WHAT YOU PROMISED HIM?

STRAUD

I DID, AND I HAVE.

I AM NOT TURNING YOU OUT.

SHE IS WISE. SHE IS NOT OF MY LINEAGE. THERE IS MUCH SHE KNOWS THAT I DO NOT.

CEDRIC knew SVETLANA was a native of MUSKOVY. Of the scant things he knew about her, notably that she’d once sold her services as a ghostwriter to a famous name, he reckoned her birthyear in the 1810s or 1820s. Older than many, but not as old as STRAUD.

CEDRIC

YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO SHIRK YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

STRAUD

I DON’T APPRECIATE THE ACCUSATION.

CEDRIC

ISN’T SHE CAUGHT IN THE HALF-DREAM?

Vampires commonly believed in supernatural causes of insanity.

STRAUD

THAT’S WHAT MARSCAPONE THOUGHT.

SHE IS LUCID EXCEPT FOR PREDICTABLE FITS. I DON’T THINK HER ILLNESS WILL TROUBLE YOU.

CEDRIC

SO YOU WANT ME TO TRAIN WITH SOME HALF-SANE VAMPRESS–

WHAT.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF ME?

A lesser man might have laughed.

STRAUD

HARDLY.

CEDRIC

THEN WHAT IS IT?

STRAUD

YOU NEED SOMEONE. SHE NEEDS SOMEONE.

IT SEEMS A NATURAL FIT.

CEDRIC

SO YOU’RE PLAYING AT BEING A MATCHMAKER.

STRAUD’s tone hints at exasperation. He speaks calmly and carefully.

STRAUD

IT WOULD BE EASIER IF YOU SIMPLY REGARDED THIS AS A BUSINESS MATTER.

CEDRIC

AND WHAT ABOUT SEBASTIAN?

STRAUD

THE TWO ARE SEPARATED.

AMICABLY.

BUT SEPARATED NONE-THE-LESS.

STRAUD removes a knife from his jacket pocket and flips it open. He runs his finger down the blade.

CEDRIC

I DON’T WANT A YOUNGLING AS MY MASTER.

STRAUD continues to inspect the knife but looks away a moment, locking eyes with CEDRIC to try to impress upon him the severity of his speech.

STRAUD

IT IS UNWISE FOR ANY, BUT ESPECIALLY ONE AS YOUNG AS YOU, TO FORGET HIS PLACE.

But CEDRIC continues to plead with blue eyes.

CEDRIC

PLEDGE ME TO VATORE.

STRAUD

(stern) LET ME BE CLEAR WITH YOU, CEDRIC.

THIS IS NOT A CHOICE.

YOU WILL TRAIN WITH OBOROVSKY.

BESIDES WHICH–

STRAUD looks toward his blade. He turns the knife around and uses it to remove a speck of dirt from underneath his fingernails.

STRAUD

SHE PLAYS WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

CEDRIC tries to interest STRAUD in a quick sparring match, but he won’t have it. He’s too much to do, too much to focus upon. He disappears within the house.

Soon after, KEVIN reappears to try to bolster CEDRIC’s mood. They make small talk in anticipation of the arriving guests. KEVIN sits down to work upon the piano, providing some kind of ambiance as guests appear.

CEDRIC feigns attention to KEVIN’s piano while the noise level in the room slowly rises.

KEVIN

WELL, I HAD NO IDEA SHE PLAYED.

SMALL WORLD.

CEDRIC

YEAH.

SMALL FUCKING WORLD.

CEDRIC is sour and full of resentment.

KEVIN

HE’S NOT PUSHING YOU AWAY.

JUST WANTS YOU TO GET NEW EXPERIENCES.

SVETLANA’S A TALENTED SHAPESHIFTER, I’VE HEARD.

CEDRIC

YEAH, THAT’S REALLY WHAT I GIVE A FUCK ABOUT.

RUNNING AROUND IN IDIOT’S COSTUME. PLAYING PRETEND AT BEING A BEAST.

THANKS BUT NO THANKS.

I’VE DONE MY TIME.

CEDRIC’s acerbic tone ends the commentary. KEVIN continues to play. CEDRIC leans against the instrument and stares at the wall-hangings.

His focus is, however, soon interrupted.

STRAUD

CEDRIC, CEDRIC.

CEDRIC turns his head back into the throngs of people.

STRAUD approaches with a slight woman in a long black dress. She has hair to match, drawn up in an updo. One lock of hair has been loosened from its grasp.

For what it’s worth, she is beautiful.

STRAUD

CEDRIC, MEET SVETLANA OBOROVSKY.

MY LADY, THIS IS CEDRIC.

SVETLANA clasps the sides of her dress and curtsies.

CEDRIC

IT’S NICE TO FINALLY MAKE YOUR ACQUAINTANCE.

SVETLANA

AND YOU.

THE COUNT HAS TOLD ME SO MUCH ABOUT YOU.

CEDRIC’s jaw seizes.

CEDRIC

(thinking) I’m sure she just means to be polite, but…

At the strange pause, KEVIN stops his playing and turns to join in the conversation.

KEVIN

I HOPE YOU’LL FORGIVE MY INTRUSION, BUT…

CEDRIC LOATHES BEING THE OBJECT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S CONVERSATIONS.

Her expression softens, apologetic.

SVETLANA

OH, OF COURSE!

DON’T WE ALL?

STRAUD delivers his lines with patience, though his careful enunciation seems to betray a quiet irritation.

STRAUD

IF YOU’LL FORGIVE THE EXPRESSION, CEDRIC.

IT’S AN OLD TURN OF PHRASE.

CEDRIC

OF COURSE.

SVETLANA

THE COUNT TELLS ME YOU TWO PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

Without saying a word, STRAUD turns and disappears into the crowd.

CEDRIC

(thinking) Of course, he’s gone.

(thinking) Yet another.

CEDRIC glares toward STRAUD’s escape route, paying no heed to the conversation at hand.

KEVIN

I PLAY A PRIEST.

KEVIN pokes CEDRIC with his elbow. SVETLANA smiles, expectantly.

CEDRIC

ME? OH.

UH.

ORC HUNTER.

SVETLANA

ORC HUNTER, HUH?

SO YOU TWO ARE HORDE SCUM.

KEVIN

YOU TAKE THAT BACK!

I AM A HUMAN. OR, AT LEAST, I WAS BORN A HUMAN.

BEFORE THE HUMANS SAID THEY WANTED NOTHING MORE TO DO WITH ME.

SVETLANA

WELL MAYBE YOU’D HAVE MORE FRIENDS IF YOU’D STOP INFECTING THEM WITH PLAGUE AND BURNING DOWN THEIR FORESTS.

THE HORDE HAS NO PLACE IN ASHENVALE.

PURE AND SIMPLE THEFT.

KEVIN

WASN’T MY IDEA.

SVETLANA

NIGHT ELF DRUID.

SPIRIT OF THE FOREST.

KEVIN

NICE. TELDRASSIL IS BEAUTIFUL.

CEDRIC is unaccustomed to discussing his imagination worlds in the prime material plane. He tries to get a word in edgewise.

CEDRIC

IT’S.

CURSED.

KEVIN

YEAH, IT’S CURSED, BUT IT’S STILL BEAUTIFUL.

AND THE NIGHT ELF MUSIC IS EXCELLENT.

I REALLY LOVE THE STARTING ZONE.

CEDRIC has his arms crossed, still leaning against the silent piano.

KEVIN

CEDRIC HERE IS JUST GRUMPY HIS TOONS ALL START OUT IN BROWN TOWN.

SVETLANA

‘BROWN TOWN’?!

HAHA. I HAVEN’T HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE.

KEVIN

YEAH, GOT THAT ONE FROM A FEW OF MY FRIENDS.

SVETLANA

SO WHY HORDE, THEN?

The question fades for a moment into the noise of the party.

CEDRIC breaks the silence.

CEDRIC

I WANTED TO ROLL HUNTER BUT I DIDN’T WANT TO PLAY AN ELF OR A DWARF.

SVETLANA

AW, DWARVES ARE KINDA CUTE.

CEDRIC

THE SAME PROBLEMS YOU HAVE WITH ORCS CAN APPLY TO THE DWARVES.

DESTROYERS. COLONIZERS. HABITAT INVADERS.

SVETLANA

YES, BUT MATTERS OF SCALE…

CEDRIC

IT’S NOT A MATTER OF SCALE.

IT’S SIMPLY THE CHOSEN TARGETS.

DWARVES MAY NOT WORRY MUCH ABOUT CHOPPING DOWN TREES, BUT THEY WILL DIG IN THE EARTH TO EXTRACT WHATEVER SHINY THING IS THE HOT COMMODITY OF THE WEEK.

AND THEY STILL CHOP DOWN PLENTY OF TREES.

AND GNOMES? DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON GNOMES.

HEADS ARE TOO BIG, BODIES TOO SMALL.

I DON’T KNOW WHY THEY CAN’T JUST HAVE AN ACTUAL HALFLING.

KEVIN

GNOMES ARE FROM AT LEAST AS FAR BACK AS WARCRAFT 2.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PRECIDENT FOR HALFLINGS AS FAR AS I AM AWARE.

CEDRIC

YEAH YEAH YEAH.

I JUST THINK THEY LOOK GOOFY.

THERE’S NO WAY THAT BODY COULD SUPPORT THAT HEAD.

I PREFER THERE TO BE A LITTLE REALITY IN MY FANTASY GAMES.

The conversation is cut short when a familiar face and set of ears approaches.

QUARQ has ruddy skin and eyes deep set underneath a pronounced hairless brow. His crown, too, shines, having long since ceased growing even the slightest covering of hair. His eyes are bright, intense, always searching.

He is an friend of STRAUD’s from the ‘old country’. Rumor had it that the man had struck it rich on the railroad. He wears a stiff old suit that couldn’t have been much fresher than his fortunes.

QUARQ

EVENING, KIDDOS.

He turns from the men to address SVETLANA.

QUARQ

MY LADY.

QUARQ bends down to administer a small kiss upon the back of SVETLANA’s hand.

She giggles tenderly.

SVETLANA

OH, QUARQ. YOU ARE TOO MUCH.

QUARQ

SO WHAT SCINTILLATING CONVERSATION HAVE I INTERRUPTED AMONG THE BRAIN TRUST?

KEVIN

VIDEO GAMES.

QUARQ

AH. THE DEMISE OF YOUNG MEN.

STUFF ROTS YOUR BRAIN, YOU KNOW.

NOT TO MENTION THEY’RE MADE BY MORTALS FOR MORTALS.

PLEASE TELL ME YOU AREN’T BORING THIS LOVELY YOUNG LADY WITH YOUR –

SVETLANA

OH, BUT I PLAY TOO.

QUARQ

YOU?!

OH. WELL.

NOW I’VE SEEN EVERYTHING.

KEVIN

THERE’S MORE PROFIT THAN YOU’D THINK TO BE MADE JUST WAITING TO BE CLAIMED IN CYBERSPACE.

QUARQ

I DON’T WANT TO PUT A DIME I DON’T HAVE TO INTO A MORTAL’S POCKET.

KEVIN

WE COULD ALWAYS START UP A PRIVATE SERVER IF THAT’D PIQUE YOUR INTEREST.

NO SUBSCRIPTION FEE REQUIRED.

QUARQ

NO, THANK YOU.

I’M A BUSY MAN.

With this, he leaves the conversation, drink in hand, and weaves out between the chattering vampires.

SVETLANA turns to KEVIN and smiles, shrugging.

SVETLANA

NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTE.

ANYWAY.

DID YOU HEAR THEY LAUNCHED SOME NEW SERVERS?

OCEANIC TIME ZONE.

CEDRIC

PING ALL THE WAY TO AUSTRALIA?

LATENCY’S GONNA BE TERRIBLE.

SVETLANA

YEAH, I KNOW, BUT…

KEVIN

OUR SERVER’S PRETTY QUIET AT NIGHT, TOO.

MIGHT BE WORTH BRAVING THE PING.

CEDRIC

YOU SAY THAT NOW.

SVETLANA

DO YOU GUYS PLAY PvE OR PvP?

CEDRIC

GOTTA BE PvP.

SVETLANA

OH, OF COURSE.

I PLAY BY MYSELF SO…

I’D RATHER NOT GET GANKED.

KEVIN

WHAT, IT’S NOT FUN TO GET NAILED WITH A TEN-THOUSAND DAMAGE SHADOWBOLT CRIT?

SVETLANA

RIGHT?
