Betty Clark

person · Book: What Time Cannot Touch

Betty Clark, or, “just Betty”, is a gentle woman who has taken to renting out a spare room in her house after the death of her husband. With little formal education, she has struggled as the sole breadwinner, often taking odd jobs to make ends meet. Sensing something unique in her tenant, she tries to encourage him to aspire to more and not so readily dismiss the power of youth.

Major Appearances

Chapter 2: Liberty

Betty invites Cedric off her stoop and into her home, allowing him to let a room after signing a brief renter’s agreement.

Chapter 3: Susurration

Cedric recalls his first evening in Newburgh where, over an offering of meatloaf, Betty mentioned her discomfort in continuing to be referred to as a “Mrs”. When Cedric returns from his outing, she remarks disparagingly on how the quality of food to be found at Sullivan’s isn’t what it used to be.

Chapter 4: Priceless Antiques

When Betty brings out some of her favorite records, Cedric is stunned to discover that rebellion can be as subtle as it is seismic.

Chapter 6: Jet Lag

The two bid each other a bittersweet farewell in which Betty realizes, like the title of a book, a few short words can be insufficient to convey the deeper message in the story of a lifetime.

Author’s Notes

Betty has been following the syndication of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but for her, nothing can replace the original.
